This standard emphasises the need to engage professionally with colleagues, parents/ carers and the community. This standard requires teachers to act with professionalism towards students, colleagues, parents/ carers and the community, and to engage in opportunities with the school community beyond the classroom.
Focus area 7.1 Meet professional ethics and responsibilities
Understand and apply the key principles described in codes of ethics and conduct for the teaching profession
During all of my placements I have acted in a professional and ethical manner, following the code of conduct. At each school I have gone through an induction in which the code of conduct is mentioned and have followed this code. Below is a section from one of my final reports showing that I have demonstrated how to do this and my supervising teachers comments on it.
Focus area 7.2 Comply with legislative, administrative and organisational requirements
Understand the relevant legislative, administrative and organisational policies and processes required for teachers according to school stage
During all of my placements I familiarise myself with emergency evacuation plans of the school. During my time at Grahamvale Primary School I was involved in a practice lockdown in which I had to manage students. I also currently hold a Working With Children Check in Victoria and NSW and have completed the only anaphylaxis training. I am trained in first aid and mental health first aid.
Focus area 7.3 Engage with parents/ carers
Understand strategies for working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/ carers
Whilst working at Wodonga South Primary School I regularly talk to parents/ carers before and after school. Whilst talking to parents and carers I must ensure that what I am saying is appropriate and sensitive to the topic and environment we are in. I must be aware of my position at the school and the boundaries of which I should speak in.
Focus area 7.4 Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities
Understand the role of external professionals and community representatives in broadening teachers' professional knowledge and practice
During my time at Sacred Heart Primary School I sat in on a consultation with the Speech Pathologist. I also helped the speech pathologist run classroom activities for 1 period a week. During this one period a week I would help her run activities and then refer to these activities when I was teaching the other days of the week. I have attended all staff meetings whilst I have been on placement and KLA meetings.
