Standard 1: This standard encompasses the knowledge teachers must have to engage students successfully in their learning. The standard requires teachers to be aware of students physical, social and intellectual development, characteristics and how they learn. The standard also requires teachers to have a thorough knowledge on teaching strategies and differentiating strategies that meet the needs of all individual students, including those with different learning needs and cultural backgrounds.
Standard 2: This standard encompasses the knowledge teachers must have about content and pedagogy. The standard requires teachers to know the content and the fundamental concepts of their subjects and the curriculum in order to create and implement effective teaching and learning opportunities for students. The teaching and learning opportunities presented to students should include opportunities for students to develop literacy and numeracy skills and should integrate the use of information and communications technology (ICT). Teaching and learning programs should be designed so that all students develop an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages.
